Our story and inspiration behind Crazy Goat Coffee, begins with a legend. Once upon a time, a long time a goat, (we’re talking around 800AD) the story of the discovery of coffee begins…
This is the story of Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat-herder (cue melodic yodelling, as you wish) who one day notices his goats going crazy for a certain type of berry from a certain type of tree. So wide-awake the goats became, it is said, that they just wouldn’t sleep at night. Excited and fascinated (and probably pretty tired from wired goats), Kaldi went straight to the Abbot at his local Monastery. Together they made a drink with the berries, only to find that it kept them more alert throughout long sessions of prayer.
News of the drink’s qualities soon spread to Medina and Mecca, and eventually to Cairo, Damascus, Baghdad and Constantinople. By the 15th century, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia and by the 16th century it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. By the 17th century, coffee had made its way to Europe. And then not too long after this, of course, it was down your local High Street.
And so, a millennia or so later, Crazy Goat Coffee was born. Inspired by the legend of Kaldi and his jumping goats; and fuelled by the passion for that very special bean.
